but as presented? The game really does feel like something that would have been hands down amazing 10, maybe even 5 years ago. Given time if Gearbox and the like go back in and do something 'new' with Duke, we'll see. It has all the polished aspects of what to expect for a revival in the likes of a pretty legendary gaming icon as Duke Nukem himself except when you really look at it critically, the game does show its age. This is where DNF starts to show where it's come from. The game is here, judge it for what it is, except you can't really ignore how long it took to get here either. That's easy to say with nearly 15 years of hype to live up to but as it is stated in the art book, with commentaries by George Broussard, you really have to put that aside and forget how long it took. Honestly it's all subjective and I wish I could be concrete on the subject but like I said, DNF exists as a paradox which can go either way assuming anything else is pulled from this pseudo-raised-back-from-the-dead franchise. If on the other hand you're into the retro, vintage style game mechanics with a bit of post modern game design thrown in, Duke might deliver. I mean if anyone has been spoiled by the likes of Halo, Call of Duty or even Battlefield: Bad Company, or any other game to date, they'd probably be vastly disappointed. I'd recently beat the game and I'm currently going through it again (mostly for Steam achievements) yet for anyone else who would look to this game for replay value, it's. Sentiments aside, the game itself plays exactly how anyone who's played Duke Nukem can expect, give or take a few things sacrificed (retro be saved!). We can either thank or damn Gearbox for it, I for one praise them for doing what 3D Realms sadly could not deliver. In all, this game exists as a paradox, even upon release because it heralds a potential for Duke Nukem to usher into the 21st century, or for the most of us who know what we were getting ourselves into wanting (or really, NEEDING) this game to be released it means we can finally live out a fantasy that almost didn't happen. IS BACK! It's been well over 15 years since the first FPS iteration of Duke Nukem has released and up to 12 years+ since this game has been in development? Does it deliver? Honestly, that depends on who's asking, who's been wanting to play this, who's been anticipating this game's release and who's been wanting to be disappointed. With that said, it's down to get to the nitty gritty of the deal. For those of you who have no idea who he is, what he's all about, somehow came across the Duke Nukem 3D release in only recent years and didn't play the game back in its hayday, you've missed out. But with me looking to be level with any of you on this? I've been waiting damn too long for this.Īnd Duke Nukem Forever IS a good game, but it might not just be for everyone.įor those of us who sleep, breathe, drink, piss and #$%& Duke, you know what you were getting yourself into. Not everyone will agree with me on this, and that's fine. First and foremost, I will rate this game by its highest merit on a seemingly bias situation because I am one of those guys who's been waiting for this practically half his life for amidst all the change and chaos in the gaming industry and based on the sole premise that I truly enjoyed the game on its face value when I'd set my fanatical zeal for the franchise aside and did so willingly.
